A nicotine cocrystal patent puts a third format on the table
A Chinese filing published in July describes a nicotine-ascorbic acid cocrystal and reports markedly better storage stability. It is a published patent application, not a granted patent and not a product — but it is the first serious alternative to freebase and salt in a decade.
For roughly a decade the only format question in e-liquid has been freebase or salt. A patent application published this summer proposes a third answer. It is nowhere near a bottle, and it is still worth understanding before the trade press arrives at it.
The filing — application CN202610492097.5, lodged on 14 April 2026 by the Shenzhen Huabao Collaborative Innovation Technology Research Institute Co., Ltd. — was published by China’s National Intellectual Property Administration on 7 July 2026 as CN122344184A. As reported by the industry outlet 2Firsts, it sets out a cocrystal of nicotine and ascorbic acid — nicotine held in a shared crystal lattice with a second molecule, rather than paired with an acid in the way a salt is.
What the filing claims
The application argues that the nicotine forms in current use are volatile and sensitive to oxygen, light and heat. Against that, per the published account of the filing, cocrystal samples in pouch form lost under 6% of their nicotine content across three months of accelerated storage, compared with 14.76% for nicotine base controls.
Two caveats travel with that figure. It is the applicant’s own reported result inside its own patent application — not an independent laboratory finding, and not a peer-reviewed one. And it was measured in pouches, not in liquid. Whether a cocrystal behaves the same way suspended in PG and VG is not something the document establishes.
Why a tasting desk cares
Because format is never a neutral carrier. The shift to salts rearranged how flavours are built, by removing the harshness that blends had previously used to hide their seams. A more stable nicotine form, if one ever shipped, would move a different variable: how a bottle reads at the bottom compared with the top, and what a warm shelf actually costs you.
All of which is speculative and should stay that way. On 2Firsts’ account the application is a technical proposal that gives no indication the cocrystal has been commercialised in any product, and it establishes no real-world pharmacokinetic or risk profile. Nothing on sale today uses this, no claim about how it would feel or absorb can be drawn from the document, and a patent is a proposal rather than a proof.
What the publication does establish is that an organisation with a research budget considers the freebase-versus-salt binary worth breaking. After ten years of two options, that alone is news.
Whatever form it eventually takes, the compound at the centre of this is nicotine: an addictive chemical, and one intended for adults of legal purchase age only — 21 or over in the United States, 18 or over across most other markets. Nothing here is written for anyone who does not already use it.
