No. On the only published measurement we could find, nicotine salt e-liquid keeps its nicotine better than freebase, not worse. Health Canada scientists stored commercial liquids for six months at 40 °C to mimic a year on the shelf: salt products retained a mean 85% of their original nicotine, freebase 74%. Within each format, the spread was wider than the gap.

The main body of the work is an analytical method — a gas chromatography and mass spectrometry procedure for measuring nicotine in liquids that range from a trace to 70 mg/mL — but a subset of the commercial products was put through a formal stability study, and that is the part the question turns on.

Read the storage line twice, because it is the line the retailer blogs would have to reckon with if they quoted the paper. Forty degrees in the dark is not a shelf. It is a pharmaceutical convention — the ICH accelerated condition — chosen to speed up degradation so that six months of laboratory time stands in for a year of real time. The 85% and 74% are therefore a model of a year, not a report of one. Nobody should read this piece and conclude that a bottle in a cool drawer loses a quarter of its nicotine in twelve months. Why the salt form holds its nicotine better

The paper’s own explanation is a single clause: stability was “influenced by the nicotine form (pH) of formulation and its chemical composition”. Unpack it and you have the whole freebase-versus-salt argument this site has been making since salts became the default format, applied to the bottle rather than the throat.

Freebase nicotine is nicotine in its unprotonated, alkaline form, dissolved straight into the propylene glycol and vegetable glycerine base. A nicotine salt liquid is the same molecule after an acid — benzoic acid is the common choice — has been added, which protonates the nicotine and pulls the liquid’s pH down. No pH values for the individual products appear in the sections of the paper we could open, and we will not invent them; the point they make is directional. Lower pH, protonated nicotine, better retention. Higher pH, free nicotine, more loss. That is consistent with the direction every shop asserts, and it is the first time we have seen the direction attached to a number.

What it is not is a flavour effect. The paper’s discussion separately notes that a tea-flavoured product lost 69% of its nicotine, the paper’s own words for it, though the sentence we read does not say which format that product was; we are not going to tie it to the 31% freebase minimum without that confirmation. The authors treat flavour chemistry as part of the matrix nicotine lives in, not a bystander. But the lever they name is the nicotine form. If you want the format that keeps, the evidence points at salts.

Here is where the review turns on the claim. An eleven-point gap between means sounds decisive until you read the ranges beside it. Freebase liquids ran from 31% remaining to 106%. Salts ran from 64% to 99%. Those are not two neat populations; they are two wide, overlapping smears, and a freebase bottle at the top of its range beat a salt bottle at the bottom of its range by a wide margin. The best predictor of what is left in your bottle is not which format it is. It is which product it is — who made it, what else is in it, and what it has been through — and the format only tilts the odds.

The 106% deserves its own sentence. A liquid cannot gain nicotine sitting in a vial in the dark, so a maximum above 100% is measurement scatter, batch variation or both, and it tells you that the precision of the whole exercise is a few points either side. It also tells you something about the number printed on the bottle. A 2018 University of Auckland paper by Mahima Bansal and colleagues, a stability-indicating HPLC method for nicotine in e-liquids, which we read on the same day, measured commercial liquids at the start of their lives and found every one above its label, up to 117.9 ± 1.87% of the stated content. Put the two studies side by side and the sober landing is this: the strength on the label was never that precise to begin with, so a bottle that has drifted 15% one way may simply have cancelled a label that was 15% wrong the other way.

Bansal’s group also stressed nicotine as a raw substance and inside finished liquids. As a substance it was unstable at 60 °C; formulated into e-liquid it held for up to 10 days at that temperature. The base protects the drug, in other words, at least in the short term. That is the same story the Health Canada composition clause tells from the other end.

How long does vape juice last? Nobody has printed a figure we could read

The second half of the plan for this piece was a maker-by-maker table: what named manufacturers themselves print or publish as shelf life for their freebase and their salt version of the same flavour. We could not build it. Vape Dinner Lady’s FAQ page returned nothing but site chrome to our fetch; Vampire Vape’s FAQ refused the request outright. We are not going to tell you that manufacturers publish no such figure, because we did not establish that — we established that we could not open one on the two makers’ sites we tried, and that a search for manufacturer shelf-life statements surfaced only more retailer blogs.

What Health Canada found on the bottles is more telling anyway. The team could locate a labelled expiry date on only 43% of the products it studied — 22 out of 51 — and calls that a lack of product quality information that should be communicated to consumers. Canada caps nicotine in vaping liquids at 20 mg/mL, a limit the paper notes was adopted in June 2021, but a cap on strength is not a rule about dating, and the paper’s own count says most bottles in that sample carried no date at all. That sits uncomfortably beside the batch detail a Health Canada recall notice carries, which is often more than the bottle itself.

So the honest answer to “how long does it last” is that the only published measurement stops at a simulated year, reports nicotine remaining rather than a use-by date, and found that the industry mostly does not print one. If your bottle has a best-before date, it is the maker’s claim and nothing in the literature we read tests it.

It does, in every subgroup the trial tracked, and the loss is not visible. The measurement that produced the 85% and 74% is GC-MS on a diluted aliquot; no colour chart or sniff test was involved, and the paper offers none. What it does add is that at the end of the 24 weeks, non-targeted analysis tentatively identified three new compounds in some liquids that were not present at the start. The authors do not say what they are or what they do when heated and inhaled, and neither will we. Steeping enthusiasts will recognise the shape of the finding from what happens when a bottle is deliberately left to age: the liquid you finish is not the liquid you opened, and a darker bottle tells you the flavour chemistry has moved, not what the nicotine is doing.

On danger, we will not go further than the evidence. The trial was framed around a different worry — that a liquid delivering far less nicotine than labelled fails a smoker using it to quit — and it did not assess the toxicology of what it found. An old bottle is a bottle of uncertain strength containing compounds nobody has characterised, in a product that contains an addictive drug in any case. That is a description, not a verdict, and it is the most anyone can honestly print.

As a piece of work the Health Canada study is careful and open, and it does what a decade of retailer copy never did, which is put a number on the comparison and print the ranges beside it. The claim it is asked to support — that nicotine salt e-liquid keeps longer than freebase — comes out true on average and unreliable per bottle, which is a better answer than “marginally, yes” and a worse one for anyone hoping the format alone would settle what is in an old 10 ml.

Three things follow. First, the format question is real but small; the batch question is large, which is why this site keeps banging on about batch codes and dates. Second, the label was never as precise as its two-digit strength implies, going in or coming out.
