What is the difference between 50/50 and 70/30 e-liquid? Both numbers are carrier ratios of vegetable glycerin (VG) to propylene glycol (PG). On a retail bottle, 70/30 usually means 70% VG: a thicker liquid sold for cloud-heavy sub-ohm tanks. 50/50 is thinner and is the usual pick for small mouth-to-lung pod coils.

Evergreen: this desk read the sources below on 19 October 2026 and tested nothing itself.

What does “thick” actually mean?

The three retailer guides our search pass read, from Tidal Vape, Black Note and ECigMafia, describe VG as thick and PG as thin, and stop there. PubChem’s glycerol record puts a number on it: 954 centipoise at 25 °C for glycerol, and 17 cP for a 70% glycerol solution. That second figure is not an e-liquid, but it shows how fast glycerol thins when diluted.

PubChem’s propylene glycol record gave no figure we could use, so no PG or blend viscosity appears here. A 2020 model by Spann and colleagues opens by stating that e-liquid viscosity is key to performance and sensitive to both composition and temperature; they modelled PG, glycerol and water mixtures from 20 to 80 °C.

Why 70/30 can dry out a pod coil

A wick refills by soaking. A thicker liquid soaks more slowly, and a small mouth-to-lung coil has narrow ports to draw through. Push a high-VG base into one and the cotton can lose the race, which is the dry-wick failure covered in our piece on why a vape tastes burnt. That is reasoning from the figures, not a bench test.

70/30 vs 50/50 throat hit: the trial

Smith and colleagues (Nicotine & Tobacco Research, 2020, Medical University of South Carolina) gave 30 current smokers with little vaping history three liquids, double-blind: 70/30, 50/50 and 0/100. The paper writes PG/VG, so its 70/30 is 70% PG, the reverse of a retail bottle. The highest-PG liquid was rated stronger on throat hit. Preference did not differ significantly, and the authors found the ratio had minimal impact on most outcomes.

Which ratio suits which device

Ratio (VG/PG, retail order)Device it is sold forReason, in sourced terms
50/50Mouth-to-lung pods, starter kitsLess glycerin, which is the viscous carrier (954 cP neat)
70/30Sub-ohm tanks, direct-to-lungMore glycerin; wider coil ports cope with slower wicking (our reasoning)

The pairings are retail convention, from the guides above. Nicotine type is a separate question, which our post on mixing nic salt with freebase works through.

FAQ

What is 70/30 vape juice?

It is e-liquid whose carrier is 70% vegetable glycerin and 30% propylene glycol, in the VG-first order most retail bottles use. Check the label, though: some research papers, including the trial cited here, write the ratio PG-first, so the same two numbers can describe the opposite liquid.

Is 70/30 smoother than 50/50?

That is the retail convention, and one blinded trial points the same way without testing it directly. Smith and colleagues found that 30 smokers rated the highest-PG liquid, 70% PG, as having a stronger throat hit than a 50/50 or an all-VG liquid. The trial did not test a retail 70% VG blend.

Which produces more vapour, 50/50 or 70/30?

The retailer guides read for this piece credit glycerin with the clouds, so they point to 70/30, and they pair it with sub-ohm tanks. That is trade convention, not a measurement this desk made or read, and no vapour-volume figure from a primary source is cited here.

The ratio changes texture, clouds and coil load, not what the liquid is for: delivering nicotine, an addictive drug. This site is for adults of legal purchase age in their market only, and nothing here is a reason to start.
